Caño Island Biological Reserve

Located about 30 miles off Uvita Beach in Bahía Ballena, Caño Island Biological Reserve protects 320 hectares of land and 5,800 hectares of marine environment. It is home to some of the most extensive and best-preserved coral reef systems on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, including five distinct coral platforms ranging from 0.8 to 4.2 hectares.

The experience

Boat journey from Uvita

The tour departs from Uvita Beach at 7:30 a.m. The boat ride to Caño Island takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Depending on the season, dolphins or whales may be seen along the way; wildlife sightings are natural and cannot be guaranteed.

Two hours of guided snorkeling

On arrival, the experienced crew assesses the day’s conditions and chooses the snorkeling site with the best visibility and safety. A knowledgeable guide accompanies the group throughout approximately two hours in the water, leading you toward vibrant reefs, pointing out marine life and sharing facts about the species encountered.

Lunch and island beach break

After snorkeling, enjoy a quick lunch aboard the boat: wraps filled with rice, chicken, avocado and plantain. You will then have a 30–40 minute break on one of the island’s beautiful beaches to relax and take in the scenery before returning to Uvita Beach. The captain will continue watching for dolphins or whales during the return trip.
